They're common around here. I can usually find 2-3 in the basement if I look for them.

Last winter I was fixing a water leak and had to remove the cover to the water meter near the street. Someone else put i back on and came back with the look of shock on their face. They found a big fat one under the cover and wondered how I didn't get bit as they had watched me earlier put my hand blindly all over that area while I was struggling trying to turn the water back on without the proper wrench. It was freezing cold. Wonder how they hold up in such a cold area?

Last fall my nephews were splitting wood while we we sawing and they called me over to make a positive id on one they found under the bark. It was a butte. I though afterward I should have gotten and posted a picture of it. WB got it done.

Never seen one up close.
