:D Hi everybody, I'm getting ready to start on my new shop. First things first though. We are getting mini mobile container on Tuesday to put everything from the old shop into, while the new shop is built. The old shop and the new shop share part of the same foot print so I am going to have to tear the old one down before building the new one. The new shop is going to be 25' X 30'. The old one is 20' X 20'. Here is the look I'm after.(link below) The building in these photo's is only 16' X 20' so we're going to have to change some things. This is a big ordeal so I' am going to build this new shop heavy & stout Post and beam style. Instead of mortise & tenon though, I am going to be using steel angle and lag bolts at all the connections. I'm thinking 6" x 6" post and beams 6" X 6" steel angle and 1/2" plate steel for the connections. Then I can cut shoulder joints for the kickers. Any ideas are surely welcome and I will be posting pix of the progress as we move along. We plan on being completed by mid March. We are planning on this being a shop/office/store. Mostly shop though. Please look at all of the photos. Also there is a video of one being built. If you guys see anything you would change, please let me know. I am looking foward to this undertaking and can't wait for it to be complete. 8)

looks like a lot of fun to me. Are you going to have a loft or a cathedral ceiling. Are you going to insulate, Im sure it gets pretty hot there in the summer. I hope to timber frame a barn in the future. Got a lot of other things that need to be done first. I really have no need of a barn. Just want one, figure out a use later. But every buisiness needs an office that shows off the quality of your work. You could hang a lot of pictures of your work. That angled slab would look good as an office table or a wall ornament.

sounds great to me. You might just start something profitable. Get away from the general framing lumber and start sawing pieces for their their looks and value.

:D Well Folks,... it's starting. I have the footprint layed out for the new shop. Starting to build the footers today. However we have freezing rain and snow here. Hope to get these footers done today, then start sawing the parimeter beams for the floor. Will get some pix when there is actually something to take a picture of. 8)

Boy, there is just enough room to build the new shop with out tearing down the old one first. The string line will be the front porch.Theres only about 4" between the string and the old building.

Looks like a major under taking I know it will look good,,, But ,, why dont you just do a stick building and keep the same foot print and layout, a stick building ,,,2x4,,2x6,, builds so much faster,,, cover it with lapsiding,, I think with the final and finished product, your gonna have the same bragging rights,,, I also would build 24' instead of 25' because of other building material, weather it be plywood or sheet rock or what have you, as a rule there is less waist with an even increment,,
You put the question out there,, so those are my thoughts, as well as I would also consider the surroundings and such, and build with that in mind,,
Any of that make sense?

Oh yes Robert, all of it makes since. I am building it extra heavy to show what can be done with the mill. All the post and beams are going to be 6x6 and lag bolted together with steel angle clips. Once the floor is finished, it will fly up. I'm even making the rafters at the post 6x6. Gonna be a heavy building. Also instead of 25 x 30 I'm thinking about 25x40. Well see. 8)

I've built alot of barns and I have yet to have a client say he wished it were smaller. Have you ever tried board on board siding? I tried that on the interior of my shop and it looks great. I just had a bunch of 1" slabs I needed to get out of the way so I nailed them up with the live edges out. It went really fast too since you only have to cut the end ones.

Yeah I'm gonna do that in parts of the building. Gonna have many different variations of siding though out the building.
