:D Hi Everybody, I am going to be building a small cabin in the woods behind my house. I know I'm gonna need lotsa help on this so..... I am starting this forum just for me  Hopefully you all will be as willing to answer my questions, as I am to start a new forum  8) Below is a building something like I am talking about except I will be timberframing this little building. I wanna learn to do that, before I bite the dust. 8) Canmore 12ft. x 18ft. is the one I like. Take the 3D tour, kinda cool.

:D Hi All, I want to get this thing going soon. I'm building this little building 12' X 18'. Ya recon I gotta have a concrete footer? The spot that I'm putting it is on a rock line (large rock underground) that runs all the way accross my property, so the ground is very hard and stable. I was thinking about using some large timbers like 8"T X 20"W, oak slabs with plastic undernieth, whata ya think? This also opens the option of being able to move it, if I was to make those slabs like skids. Need input. 8)

I dont know anything about Timber frames but when i bild sheds i make them moveable. My sheds become two or three diffrent sheds in there life time. I had a wood shed but it is storage shed right now and here this spring it will be a pig house here soon. The shed that is going to be a pig pen is about 25 feet from the house and weill get moved before the pigs get here.
I really like the way timber Frames look.
Thanks Alot Mr Mom

Howdy Woodbutcher,
Nice forum ya got here. I've been timberframing here in Nebraska for a few years now. Your cabin looks like a fun project. I think that big sill should work well too. For your foundation, some dry laid stone should be just fine. Make sure you have plenty of air ventilation between the plastic and the cabin to keep your floor system dry. Goshen timberframes puts on some great workshops for beginning timberframers. They're in Franklin,NC. They were some of the nicest people I've ever met. Maybe all you folks in NC are like that.

The higher you can get that wood off the ground the better. Don't use red oak outdoors, especially near the ground. It rots too quick. Got any black locust in your area for the sills? It'll last til the cows come home. And what kind of wood are you going to use for the logs? (I like red cedar.) Are you going to flatten two sides? How are you going to seal the cracks? Too many questions at once?

Using large rocks to hold up a cabin or house used to be s.o.p. around here. I've heard it referred to as a floating foundation. Maybe you got some large, reasonably flat, ones around your property serving as bush hog bait. I'm sure it's easy for you to get some. And I'm sure your loader will have no problem moving them. And I'm going to have to watch what I say here because we now have a real pro (Troy) watching.

Hey woodbutcher,
A few questions. Were you going to insulate this building? Did you want a common rafter system ( easier ) or a principal rafter common purlin roof system? What kind of wood were you planning on using? Troy

:D Hey Troy, I'm not sure about the rafters, not common though. I do know I wasn't going to insulate it. I was going to use SYP. It is really just for show and tell

Or maybe starting too many projects at one time . Like maybe a log arch or something????
Don't feel bad WB, I have tons of projects going on at the same time, always! Takes some time, but they all get done sooner or later. (most are later!)
