Could anyone help with identifying these logs. They were harvested from a jobsite in Hendersonville, NC. Hoping to have these milled for some fine furniture. The logs are nearly 3' in diameter and range from 10' -12' in length.

Hello and Welcome to thelumberworksforums.com . Hope you find all the answers you need. We are in the process of a Domain name change at our forums and things are kinda slow while folks get re-connected. Your logs look like red oak to me but I'm not the best at tree ID. However there are some members here that can and will help. Again, Welcome to our forums and hope to see you around alot more. Once everybody get's reconnected, it'll get busy again.

The bark looks like white oak to me. Hard to tell.

For my two cents up here in Northern Minnesota, the logs in the pictures look like they could be white ash - they could be white oak, don't know if there is white or green ash where you got these from.

It's definitely a type of oak. The medullary rays are a dead giveaway. Now what type of oak, is another question. As WVUFAN said, the bark looks a lot like white oak. If it was an ash, it would have the distinct diamond patterned bark. The wood may not be too great, based on the decay around the outer part of the logs. I had some like that, and it had a real cheesy odor to it after sawing it up. Some of it was ok after drying, but the smelly wood was still smelly after drying. Mine was red oak. If you have a saw, I would saw it up (quarter saw if you can) and see what you get. If you have to pay someone to saw it, I don't know.

Very true, good point WB. Of course, if one had one of those huge super-duper hydraulic mills they could slap that big boy on there and just slice away. I"m really surprised you haven't come up with some kind of mill stretching gadget to get another 5 or 6 inches out of that NW. Let me know when you come up with one. I could use one too. :P
