Friend of mine asked me if i was interested in some SYP logs coming from a lady friend of his's yard. I said sure, how many. He said 4 or 5. I said how big, he said medium, he's familiar with the monsters i usually saw.
When i arrived the tree service cutting them down was TICKLED to see me. they were wondering what they were gonna do with the trees cause it is a long way back to there usual drop point. they buked them into 10'6" logs for me and loaded them on my trailer. can't get no better than that. 3 loads so far, 46 logs total. pics to come.
Now the lady wants the rest of 20-30 trees removed, so i get them too. And the lady next door having them cut down a middle sized red oak. I love free logs.
And the tree service guy has 12, 24-36" red oaks he wants gone plus 14 large SYP trees to be taken down in the next few days. The longer i hung out with him, the more logs he gave me. He has a sawyer local to him that he gives logs but right now he's too far away for it to be practical to haul them too him so i get'm. sounds like i'm gonna be busy, too busy to saw, but i'll get too them. Ken

Ken,
Enjoy the feast..Tree service guys who will work with you are the ones who better understand the profits to their bottom line. More and more are begining to give logs to our urban sawyers.

Sounds like you have a keeper. :D When you have a stockpile of logs, calls for a bigger and better plan.

Nothing is better then free logs. You lose nothing but time when you saw them. Good score, I'd like to find me some of that right now.

Thanks guys, come on over and i'll load you up. I'm actually running out of places to put logs right now, guess i'm gonna have to take them down the hill to the old well site and stack them there. Its been empth since the mid 80's, they spilled so much salt water there that the grass doesn't grow there still. Ken

Hey kobraken
I dont know if this picture is still on the Lumberworks forum, but this lil crane deal has been more then great for me, I am able to stack logs up on the side of the trailer, as well as pluck logs also.
Course some situations are more ideal then others,, I think in the one picture the pine log being loaded is a 16-footer, and then the crocked one, was still large in diameterand 12' long,,

The trailer is a 16' car carrier, and the boom is 100" long, the hydrolic jack is a 8ton long ram, so on heavy lifts I get the boom up high, and on real heavy lifts I have a pair of brackets then swing out and brace that jack with the mast. They electric winch is a 3,000lb 12volt, with 24volts goin in to it. { Faster-N-Stronger }

Update------ now getting logs from the neighbors across the street........... 14 logs. Have 16 more trees coming down from the original ladies yard, average 4 cuts from each, 64 more logs from her. THEN the tree guy tells me 5 trees from the other neighbor, also 4 logs per tree, 20 more logs. That 142 logs total, and it could go up. And then he offers me 20 monsters that are gonna go 6 logs MIN per tree............... They are a little farther away, might have to turn them down . Any of you guys need some logs??????? I'm running out of places to put them . Ken

Robert, did you make the log loader on the trailer or buy it somewhere? I've got a trailer just like that one and really don't use it that much. I'd like to find out more on it, that might work great for me once I get more set up here to go out and get logs. I've got a bobcat to unload with. thanks, Ricky

UPDATE to the UPDATE------38 more logs today, bringing the total to 121. Figured out how to stack them 3 high, and i can unstack them with the tractor so the piles are under control for the time being. will take some pics tomorrow . guess this is a good time to be down for maintenance, replacing a bad bearing and having my band wheels turned. now i can haul logs while i wait on parts.
